Nice to Meet You

I ran into a friend the other day. He was with a colleague of his at that moment and he introduced us to each other. While shaking hands, she said “Nice to meet you”. It might just be a function of time, I know that given enough time I can change that feeling. I wanted to verify the validity of that statement, but decided it would probably be rude to inquire at that particular moment.

Now, I am not Johnny Depp where by releasing the anticipation of meeting me a feeling of niceness would engulf the person meeting me at the very start of the moment we were to meet. Or say they were to meet me, Johnny Depp, in a surprise encounter, perhaps the person meeting me would be tickled by elements of niceness and thereby exclaim “Nice to meet you”. In those instances I would understand someone feeling nice the very moment they met someone they’ve never met before. But I am not Johnny Depp, the starting seconds of our encounter couldn’t possibly have been that nice.

My set response to instant “nice to meet you”s will now be either “I wish I could say the same, but we’ve barely met”, or, “please give me a chance”.
